I am happy to report that are small permaculture garden is thriving. Seeds have sprouted and seedlings have taken root. I’m thinking we’re heading for a bumper winter crop.
Cape Honeysuckle is one of the most versatile plants an indigenous garden can have. You can prune it into a hedge, let it trail up a tree or grow it into a shrub.
My friend Rike gave me my first plant a few years ago and ever since then I’ve been hooked. I now have a number of plants in my garden, each a different colour (red, orange and yellow). I only know which colour they are when they flower.
The pics below are of my yellow plant, currently in bloom.
This is a follow-on from Sonya’s earlier post, showing my wild dagga flowering profusely. I also started with a small twig of a plant which has now grown into this great bush.
I couldn’t find this plant in my succulent book so all the information I have is anecdotal. I think its called the Kudu Lily and from the Karoo. I’m guessing it got its name from the fact that the kudu likes to eat its flower?
It has a spiny stem and dark, waxy leaves which it loses in winter.
