I snapped these pics in a friend’s garden in KwaZulu-Natal but don’t know what they are or if they are indigenous. Does anybody recognise them? Or know what they might be used for?

Your flowers are crinums. In fact, they might be the ‘milk and wine’ variety, but I am not sure. I have some all pink ones in my garden and love it when the blooms show up.

hi jan,
thanks for the identification. i think they might be crinum acaule, see pic and description on this page:
Crinum macowanni common in Kwa-zula Natal and northwards
This is a bulb, so the beautiful flowers suddenly appear. If you live in Glenwood, you will notice that they suddenly appear on some of the islands in the roads, for example Lena Arends (Manning Road). They come up wherever they want to – pathways etc, and I leave them to grow wherever they like. Also known as the River Lily.
Hi Mackaya. Thanks for the info, I have also seen them around Glenwood, they are lovely.
