This fynbos plant has remarkable colouring. The leaves are a blue-grey and its flowers go from a purple to a lovely brown. Again, I forgot to keep the name of it so if anyone recognises it please let me know. Although it looks like it wouldn’t do so well in Durbs, it is thriving in my garden.
I think it’s Salvia afra-lutea (or something very similar to that.) As far as I know it’s very good for coastal gardens, drought hardy and wind tolerant.
cool, thanks Tara. it was actually one of the few plants that still looked good during our long, dry winter so drought resistant it is!
Niall a knowledgeable lady at Tropical nursery told me that any plants with leaves that have that grey ‘fur’ covering are definitely not from KZN and most likely Cape side. That grey fur is the reason they are so drought hardy.
The plant above is Salvia africana-lutea. Common names Wild sage, Strandsalie. Occurs in dry fynbos, also coastal dune vegetation. Recommended for coastal gardens.
thanks Zelda, you’re a mine of great information 🙂
If you are on the West Coast for spring flowers, you will see it.
The flowers are full of nectar and get constant visits from weaver birds during spring in my garden.
those fowers have a unique sticky odour
