Wanted: Jade vine creeper

WANTED : Jade vine creeper, also known as Emerald creeper (Strongylodon macrobotrys).

I live near Hoedspruit in Limpopo Province, but regularly visit Durban. There was a magnificent jade vine creeper in our garden when we bought the house, but our builder destroyed the plant before we moved in, during building renovations! It is possible to propagate from semi-ripe stem cuttings and I am happy to try this method. Can anyone help?

I’m also looking for a jade vine and have someone visiting Durban this week. If you find a grower please could you let me know. I had the name of a grower in Durban but lost it when my hard drive crashed. I will never have this opportunity again so hope you’ve found a grower. There’s also the red jade Mucuna bennettii which is equally spectacular.

Hi there, I am 150km south of Durban and have a huge Jade vine in full bloom at the moment. I have tried to propagate from cuttings with no success although I have heard that this is not difficult if you know the trick. Tell me how to do it and I will help you with a plant ;=)

  4. Michael October 1, 2012 at 5:15 am #

It will germinate from seed in 10 days – easy

  5. Alexandre October 4, 2012 at 6:40 pm #

If I had seeds I would not think about rooting cuttings ! My plant and the ones I know do not produce fruits and I have read several times that S.macrobotrys is not self fertile/compatible….
I have germinated other Strongylodon species without problem, you are right Michael, it is easy and fast.

I am also looking for this plant please. We had a block’s gardens landscaped this week and the landscaper ripped out the jade vine we had and carted it off. The old ladies in our block are distraught. I am equally concerned and would like to see it replaced. How can we find this?

Hello all, here is a bizzare coincidence. I was looking for Jade Vine seeds oniline – also due to having first encountered it in Ramsgate (see posts here above). BUT this is the twist – that Jade Vine plant was planted by my late uncle, Paul vand Niekerk! He was a retired botanical and zoological researcher who had taken on the job of supervising the (quite large) holiday home and gardens of a very wealthy Bloemfontein businessman, whose name escapes me now. I was but a child then but uncle Paul had imported the seeds in the mid to late 1970?s from abroad (I THINK actually from the Botanical Gardens in Mauritius, possible Madacascar? But can’t be sure). Anyway, what a weird coincidence! I am happy to see that my eccentric but amazingly talented Unvle Paul’s efforts thrived and enthused others too! It certainly did me. Nowadays I live variously in the UK and Tanzania. And I am also and STILL desperately trying to find these seeds. Can anybody help? Email: bernardborchardt@gmail.com

    Hi everybody,

Would anybody know if this creeper will grow in Johannesburg? Or perhaps suited only for a humid climate.

I bought a plant at a nursery in Umzumbe (can’t remember the name) and in two years it has covered my pergola and is in full bloom right now. Stunning. I will keep a lookout for seed, but otherwise try the nursery in Umzumbe.

  26. Tina Botha December 23, 2014 at 9:20 pm #

I see that the Jade vine is not only sought after (add my name to the list 😉 ), but proving to be a bit of a riddle with propagation. Yes it does produce seed, but apparently you need a male and female AND it is only pollinated by bats and wasps, perhaps why they don’t always produce the mysterious seed pods.
My mother-in-law has one, but we have not been successful in the propagation part, I suggest looking for the plant in a ‘for sale’ capacity on the web… (hoping to have success with that myself)
however, having said that, if anyone has managed to find the seeds, 🙂 pls let me know

as a note to my previous comment – I have managed to find a seed provider on the net and have successfully imported and grown seed from them… from America! It took almost 7 months to get here, but have managed to get my seeds as well as snail vine and the indigenous flame lilies – ironic!

Tina Botha, did you not have any problems with customs importing seeds,or did you call
    them something else?

  32. Tina Botha November 27, 2015 at 9:45 am #

nope, no problems – it came in a small padded envelope that was about the same size as a normal letter envelope. The only problem was that it took 6 month plus.
I stand under correction, but the seeds are normally treated and as the seed doesn’t have leaves, it can’t really carry any pests/diseases. I have however seen small hoya plants advertised and posted in moss from India – not sure how that works?

  36. Marion Ashmole January 20, 2016 at 2:56 pm #

Please add me to that desperate searching list for Jade Vine seeds. I live in George and the first time I saw the Jade Vine was a wonderful specimen at Sunwich Port on the South Coast of Natal.

  37. Jenny Claase January 23, 2016 at 5:07 pm #

I to have been trying to get hold of the Jade Vine after seeing it at a Waffle place in Ramsgate. I managed to get the snail vine from America a couple of years ago, I do have an import permit as we grow flowers and plants in tunnels but when ordering some seeds from England about a year ago they cancelled my order saying they are not allowed to export to SA. My snail vine is now flowering for the first time since planting it 2 years ago as they like the heat I am wondering is is because of the severe heat we have had over the last couple of months. I am looking also for the red jade

  47. Sarah Bekker February 16, 2017 at 1:14 pm #

I have had a jade vine for more than 30 years. But now it has started dying. About half of the main stem at the bottom has cracked away from the other half and is dried up, so most of the plant is still alive and seems to be still throwing new creeping fronds but the dried up part is spreading. How can I stop this. Is there a way which I can also propagate this plant other than seed pod as I have thrown them all away. I so desperately do not want to loose it. If anyone has had success in buying a new plant somewhere near Durban, please can you let me know. Many thanks Sarah.

  48. Donavan Fisher March 1, 2018 at 9:32 am #

We’ve managed to successfully grow a seed pod after numerous years of trying. We today have 4 new babies which will be available towards may/June. We just want to make sure they strong enough. They R260 each.
