Growing tomatoes from seed

Hi. I’m about to attempt to grow some fancy new tomatoes from seed. Do I really have to plant in seed trays and then transplant? Can’t I just stick them in the ground? I only have about 1 metre of soil and 2 packets of seeds, so it’s not a problem if I have to weed out some stragglers later in the process…..

I would just stick them in the ground. I know normal tomatoes grow really easily like that so I’m assuming fancy ones will as well 🙂

I have found that in the past, prior to my saving all the seeds which pass through my kitchen)tomato seeds which have been thrown in the compost bin self-seed themselves.

At this stage of the year, you wouldn’t HAVE to plant in seed trays, but as you say, you will then possibly have to thin out the weaker seedlings.

In one mtr of soil you could probably grow 4 plants comfortably.
