PopArt –  an environmental theatre showcase from the perspective of 22 young South Africans.

PopArt  is an autobiographical physical theatre performance focused on our environment from the perspective of 22 young South Africans. The piece will be devised, written and performed by Grade 7 learners from Prince Georges Primary School in Lavendar Hill. The creative process started last week with a Greenpop tree-planting day at Prince Georges Primary on 26 August. The 22 Grade 7 performers dug holes, planted and named their trees and got their hands dirty.

This week the Libellule Theatre has worked with this group of young learners to devise a short performance piece for the opening of the 2011 Out the Box Festival. With the central theme focusing on the importance of preserving our environment and the impact it has on local communities, each participant will be encouraged to incorporate their own ideas and writing into the final performance. The workshopping week will see the learners working as an ensemble and being introduced to a creative mix of visual art and physical theatre techniques – the Grade 7s will be taking photographs, writing poems, acting, moving, interacting with their environment for inspiration and creating a theatre piece that is completely their own.
