Glenwood Whole Food Market

Bulwer Park, Glenwood in Durban

Sunday 19 Sept: 10am until 3pm

The annual Glenwood Community Festival this weekend finishes on a high note with an open air whole food market and deli under the trees in Bulwer Park on Sunday 19 September from 10am until 3pm.

Glenwood Community Forum member and market convenor Darryl Hofmann wanted to create a one-off farmers’ style market for families to enjoy in the comfort of the shady Bulwer Park in Glenwood – with 60 stands offering a myriad food options, a safe supervised children’s play area, an extensive seating area ….and a mellow jazz band.

Hofmann has gathered a comprehensive mix of stall holders offering both purchasing and tasting options. Included in the stallholders mix is a deli; organic meats; fresh fish; olives; marinated feta cheese; home- made ice cream; fresh herbs; fruit and breads. Robertson’s Breweries will be on hand to offer beers and ales.

Hofmann is attempting to marry the atmosphere and product- mix of a top class farmers market, with the charm of the Midlands Meander while keeping a strong family focus – all housed in the accessible Bulwer Park.

The food stalls will be under the trees in Bulwer Park and will be interspersed with tables and chairs, and bales of hay to allow visitors the opportunity to enjoy a meal comprising items from the various stalls in an alfresco-picnic-style.

Authorities are sprucing up the park for the occasion, and bringing in additional security. An area will be fenced to create a supervised children’s play area. Activities include pony rides a jungle gym and jumping castles.

This event continues the strong culinary theme to be found in the Celebrate Durban season this year – it comes hot on the heels of the Flavorous of Durban, Durban Design a Drink,   Florida Rd Food market and the Bunnychow Barometer.

The Glenwood Community Festival is this weekend. It starts with the Glenwood Community Proms at Glenwood Prep on Friday evening at 6pm, featuring the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and soloists Lauren Da Sappa, Martin Sigamoney and Mhlaba Buthelezi under the baton of Lykele Temmingh in a programme of poplar classics, arias, all-time favourites and chart topping hits.

On Saturday is the Life Entabeni Hospital Fun Run and Walk at 7am; 8am onwards family events at Glenwood Prep includes Artists in Action, Craft Market, Durban Girls’ High School Drummies and Glenwood High School Marching Band, 10am is the Bulwer Park Waltons Back to School Treasure Hunt; 12.30 East Coast Radio All Stars Soccer Match at Glenwood Prep; and at Glenwood High there is a Schools Cricket Day.

We went along to the market day yesterday.Unfortunately we arrived at 2pm when there weren’t so many vendors left. However we still managed to buy some treats, ginger fudge and caramel rusks which I’m saving for special visitors next week. There were stalls with smoky meats and cakes and plenty of treats.A first time necklace seller with semi-precious beads as well. All of this while we walked around listening to a fabulous bluesy sounding sax. Next year I’ll be there early!
