Hi

I was wondering if you would be able to help me identify what type of tree this is.

I have seen them before with a single stem/trunk but all four of ours are multi-stemmed. At this time of year (on the Highveld) they become heavily laden with blooms, and sometimes the boughs bend right down to the ground and occasionally break off.

I would also like to know if it is possible to grow more of these trees from cuttings, and if so how is it done.

Thank you.

John

It’s Heritage Day and National Braai Day on Saturday and we will be planting 1000 trees with 500 people in Manenberg. What better way to celebrate SA’s natural heritage as well as Arbour Month? Tree planters include community members, the Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, government officials, Greenpop volunteers and keen planters. After planting 1000 trees at 17 different locations in the area, teams will come together to enjoy some great music and a braai at Proudly Manenberg.

Please call Lauren on 083 412 8006 or 021 461 9265 for more details, photographs or to arrange to speak with various people at the event. Also, please see the press release attached and below for further information about the importance of this day.

Why Manenberg?

Manenberg is an under-greened and under-privileged area on the Cape Flats that has a high crime, gangsterism and drug abuse. Despite these issues, Manenberg is a community of possibility. Organisations, community members, schools, learners and teachers have come together in Manenberg to improve their areas, take pride in their community and celebrate the incredible possibility that exists. Proudly Manenberg is an organisation doing amazing work in the area. Their vision is to build a vibrant, proud and dignified Manenberg through creating opportunities.

One hectare of Pappea capensis trees can produce approximately 1560 litres of biodiesel per annum, estimate value: R10,000/ha.

Leaves of Pappea capensis are browsed by game, birds, livestock and butterflies and there are numerous medicinal uses for the roots, bark and leaves.

Fruit from the Pappea capensis is fit for human consumption, particularly for jam, jelly and vinegar production.

Seeds of the Pappea capensis fruit produce a high-quality bio-oil.

The nutritious seedcake by-product of the biodiesel production is a high-protein animal feed.

Pappea capensis is indigenous to South Africa, reduces soil erosion by its strong rooting process and is drought resistant

Good way to spend it I would say…

This Sunday 17 July, volunteers with green fingers are expected to gather at 11:00 a.m. at Rocklands Primary School in Mitchell’s Plain to plant a variety of indigenous and fruit trees in celebration of Mandela Day, which is the following day.

For 67 minutes, these volunteers will plant much-needed trees, symbolically paying tribute to the 67 years that Madiba spent working towards making South Africa a better place. The aim is to try plant 93 trees or more in this time – one for each year of Nelson Mandela’s inspiring life.
