Marshmallow Shrub?

Can anyone shed light on the below? A friend gave me two slips which I stuck into the ground. One took, the other one died. Last year it didn’t grow much, lost its’ leaves during winter and I thought it had died too, but this summer it suddenly shot up and produced two lots of flowers. They come out white, then change colour within a day. My friend called it the Marshmallow Shrub – actually it grows into small tree size. I don’t think it is indigenous, but although I am getting very strict about what I put in the garden. I think it is quite stunning.
