Useful resource on indigenous / endemic plants

Here is a useful resource I came across the other day, added to the site for “the benefit of gardeners.” It is a searchable database of plants used by the Ethekwini Municipality’s Urban Design Team. See details HERE.

Xylotheca Kraussiana

While this might have a particularly Durban flavour (and the database is limited), I think the information is relevant to all South Africans who want to know a little more about indigenous plants and those endemic to the KZN area. You can search in a number of ways including by common and genus names, fruiting time, flowering time and flower colour, which is helpful to those with limited knowledge (eg. colour and time of flower) of the plants they are looking at. Try it out!

    Dear Sprig
I am so keen to start an endemic garden on my roof top but I am bateling to get my hands on a list of plants more specific succulents which are endemic or were natural vegitation to durban within 50k radius, I could not find the link for the search of the Municipal data base.
I feel this search will greatly help me in sourcing the correct plants I am looking for.
please assist in letting me know how I can link to this search.
    Kind regards
    Amy

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for alerting us – the link was broken. Here is the correct link:
