What succulent is this?

This amazing succulent was photographed at a friend’s farm in Southern KZN, near Kokstad.  It looks prehistoric.  Does anyone recognise it?

    It is a mystery to me too – looks like it should be swimming at the bottom of the sea.

    I have certainly seen this plant before, however cannot help you with an ID. perhaps try see if there is an image of it here.

    I think this is one of the Ledbouria. In this picture the little flowers haven’t opened yet, but it looks a lot like Ledbouria ovatifolia:

    Lucky you. Agree with Steve – Ledebouria species. Indigenous to SA.
